And I am telling you: LGBTQ+ people are not going back
How's this for clear, brave, balanced authenticity: We won't support politicians who don't represent us.
When people praise us for being trans, they praise us for our authenticity: Our vision of who we truly are, our courage to live it out, our equilibrium in this process.
Hey, this is what that clear, brave, balanced authenticity looks like: We won't support politicians who don't represent us.
Politicians who, deep down, don't believe we're full human beings?
Who don't understand why dignity and equality are important to us?
Who won't do the bare minimum of defending us with their words in public, let alone do their job of making laws that defend our basic human rights like access to healthcare?
Who won't listen to us and work with us, as is supposed to happen in democracies?
We can't support them.
For that shoot-ourselves-in-foot losing endeavor, we don't have cash, nor space, nor time.
Let's take care of ourselves.
Respect each other. Know who your friends are. Work with our allies so we all can get free.
This is about gender and sexuality. It's also about equality across race and class. It's about not having to fear harassment and brutality. It's about freedom from surveillance. It's about news coming from journalists who aren't thrown in jail and can make a living from their reporting. It's about a habitable planet with biodiversity. It's about our favorite things, like libraries full of books, which reveal themselves as necessities.
It's being who we are, having access to resources, and having a way to live. It's the air we breathe. It's the ground in which we create art. It's our actual lives that become our self-knowledge and other-knowledge. It's public information and esoteric wisdom.
What I'm doing today is contacting my elected leaders and telling them that LGBTQ inclusion is a non-negotiable requirement for my political support.
LGBTQ inclusion is a non-negotiable requirement for my political support.
Please join me and tell your elected leaders the same. #LGBTQNotGoingBack
Thanks to Julia Serano, author of Whipping Girl, for the prompt.
